Hhhh book review5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() ‘Does its po-mo surface diminish this true story?’ Lasdun asked. A review in the Guardian by James Lasdun (see here) had put me off. My first encounter with the book had been less than promising. I had to force myself to walk round the beautiful ancient city in the sunshine and to go on the bike ride to tulip fields that I had been so looking forward to prior to my trip. ![]() I was so gripped by the novel, there were days when I had to peel my body up from my hotel bed and drag myself into the university. I was in the Netherlands at the time, a visiting lecturer on a week-long Erasmus exchange. I spent a thrilling week in March 2013 trying so very hard not to reach the end of Laurent Binet’s HHhH (1). ![]()

She would have had to have been extraordinarily talented to overcome the restrictions on the admission of women. She was the only woman in her group of six students, and the fifth woman to enter that section, an impressive feat at a time when women were not usually admitted. ![]() She enrolled for the diploma course to teach physics and mathematics in secondary schools (section VIA) at the same time as Albert Einstein. In the autumn of 1896, Marić switched to the Zurich Polytechnic (later Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule ( ETH)), having passed the mathematics entrance examination with an average grade of 4.25 (scale 1–6). On December 19, 1875, Mileva Marić was born into a wealthy family in Titel in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy (today Serbia) as the eldest of three children of Miloš Marić (1846–1922) and Marija Ružić–Marić (1847–1935). She was the only woman among Albert Einstein‘s fellow students at Zürich‘s Polytechnic and was the second woman to finish a full program of study at the Department of Mathematics and Physics. The book is clearly about Albert Einstein’s wife, Mileva Maric, and it starts when Mileva goes to Zurich to study maths and physics. ![]() Christopher clark prussia5/12/2023 ![]() ![]() With great flair and authority, Christopher Clark describes Prussia’s great battles, dynastic marriages and astonishing reversals of fortune, its brilliant and charismatic leaders from the Hohenzollerns of Brandenburg to Bismarck and Frederick the Great, the military machine and the progressive, enlightened values on which it was built. ![]() Prussia began as a medieval backwater, but transformed itself into a major European power and the force behind the creation of the German empire, until it was finally abolished by the Allies after the Second World War. Wild, brash, and outspoken, Anne is everything Henry isn’t allowed to be-or want. And now he’s trapped: forbidden from pursuing a life as an artist or dating any girl who isn’t Tudor-approved. But ever since the death of his brother, the pressure for Henry to be perfect has doubled. Henry Tudor’s life has been mapped out since the day he was born: student body president, valedictorian, Harvard Law School, and a stunning political career just like his father’s. In this wonderfully creative retelling of the infamous-and torrid-love affair between Anne Boleyn and King Henry VIII, history collides with the present when a sizzling romance ignites in a modern-day high school. ![]() Published by Simon Pulse on September 1st 2015 This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. ![]() I received this book for free from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. 2 September, 2015 Steph Sinclair Reviews 7 comments ![]() Aniara martinson5/12/2023 ![]() She serves as the audience’s surrogate as we follow her leaving Earth and boarding Aniara. The lead is a queer character named Mimaroben (Emelie Jonsson). ![]() Some of the characters freak out while others try their hardest to cling to any sense of hope even if it seems they’re in denial. The entire cast does justice to their roles with many of them delivering very emotional performances. Kudos to them for creating something so impressive. It covers existential dread, the power of hope, isolation, religion, self-destruction, mortality, authoritarianism, the role of technology in our lives, and so much more.Īniara has been directed by written by Pella Kagerman and Hugo Lilja. However, don’t let that stop you from watching the indie-spectacle that is Aniara. The humans onboard have to face numerous challenges to survive. However, the spacecraft gets into an accident, goes off course, and drifts into endless space. ![]() It is about a large spacecraft taking humans to a colony on Mars (away from the terrible conditions on Earth). Trigger warning: This movie includes suicide.Īniara is based on a 1956 poem by Swedish author and Nobel Prize winner Harry Martinson. I was provided a review screener of Aniara for free. ![]() If you are a fan of science fiction, I urge you to watch Aniara. This Swedish sci-fi movie is an impressive example of how indie films can stand apart from major studio content when they are incredibly well-constructed.
